After serving in the United States Army, Shorty worked at Ferguson Chevrolet in Windsor as a mechanic for several years before starting Acker Auto Service in 1969. Since that time he has suffered a great deal and it is thought the continued ill health and suffering so preyed upon his mind that in a fit of mental aberration he thought he would end it all by taking his own life.
